This is a self centering pickup template jig for cigar box guitars. You place the jig over the box and it will automatically center itself when you tighten the side arms. It has interchangeable pickup templates, including single coil, double coil, P90, Snake Oil Humbucker, Lace Matchbook and the MGB Guitars Pitch Bender Bridge. It is used when installing electric guitar pickups into cigar box guitars.
This was designed to make the process of marking and cutting pickup holes, faster, more accurate, and cleaner, while building cigar box guitars. It eliminates the need for tape or marking on the box surface. When the jig is mounted on the box, the centerline is found for you, you only have to move the jig along the center line of the box and decide where you want your pickup. Once you have your position, drill a starter hole, and I use a flush cut bearing bit with a palm router.
The jig and templates are made with a 1/4” or 6mm thick acrylic. The top layers are 1/8” or 3mm acrylic. The jig and all templates have a bottom covered in cork. The side arms of the jig are also covered in cork to prevent slippage and scratching. If taken care of properly, this acrylic jig will last a lifetime!
